This invitational show presents the most influential contemporary art created in the United States over the preceding two years. Whitney curators Jane Panetta and Rujeko Hockley are responsible for selecting this year’s participants. The biennial skews young; in this installment, around three-quarters of artists represented are less than 40 years old. Korakrit Arunanondchai, Elle Pérez, Martine Syms and the winner of the Guggenheim’s 2018 Hugo Boss Prize, Simone Leigh, are among the artists featured.
